Ten Things TO DO For Your Puppy
- BEFORE getting a puppy, take the time to research different breeds.
- Take your pup to a veterinarian for a full check up.
- Crate train your pup.
- Socialize your pup with other friendly, vaccinated dogs of different ages and breeds.
- Socialize your pup with people of all sizes and ages.
- Allow your pup to explore under your supervision. Provide it with its own safe and appropriate toys.
- Expose your pup to as many different life situations as possible. But be careful not to overwhelm it at any one time.
- Help your pup through any unpleasant experiences by turning its attention to something fun, like a squeaky toy or ball. Do not dwell on the negative!
- Praise, encourage and reward your pup's good behavior to create good habits.
- Get your pup used to being examined. Check ears, paws, mouth and tail as a daily routine.
Ten Things NOT TO DO With Your Puppy
- Do not rub your pup's nose in its poop or urine.
- Do not spank, hit or yell at your pup.
- Do not overprotect your pup from new experiences.
- Do not keep your pup isolated for long periods of time.
- If your pup has an unpleasant experience, do not console it by petting or saying "it's okay."
- Do not let you pup wander inside or outside unattended.
- Do not take your pup to a dog park. Make individual "playdates" instead.
- Do not expect your pup to automatically know "the rules" of your house.
- Do not let your pup sleep in your bed. Provide it with a cozy place of its own near you.
- Do not avoid the vet. Your pup should have regular checkups throughout its life.
